Do i need Wi-Fi with unlimited data?

Looking to get rid of my internet because i don't like the company and i'm also getting unlimited phone data. If i have a laptop can i just use a hotspot from my iphone and get internet access from that? Also will the connection be really slow and crappy?

Theoretically - yes. BUT - cellphone companies will THROTTLE you after a certain amount - often, the first 2GB. That means, they will slow you Way down. Snail speed. Like dial-up. You do not want that. If you truly are an expert at this, there are way around it - but they are not FREE, either - you need to buy some equipment. OR spend all day at a Starbucks, Panera, or McD's.

It will be a slower connection than broadband, but your phone will rat you out to your service provider that you're using it as a hotspot. THis usually requires an additional monthly charge or bandwidth cap, and if you do it without paying for the service, they'll nail you for about 2 bucks per MB.

Internet from an ISP would be faster & more reliable over time than a data plan from a carrier, but in theory yes this would be able to work.

There are NO cell phone companies that offer unlimited HotSpot access to the internet. So whatever your HotSpot allowance is with your carrier, once you have used it up, it's gone until next month's billing cycle kicks in.

So if you binge watch movies for 8 days and use all your HotSpot data, too bad that you want to do anything for the rest of the month on your TV, laptop or tablet.

Now you may be able to tether your phone to your laptop, but if you use too much data, your carrier may tag you as a 2% data hog and throttle your usage, even if you have unlimited data, so READ your plan to find out what unlimited actually means with your carrier. Does it mean unlimited high speed data, or unlimited data at whatever speed that allow you to use?

Yes. No carrier actually has unlimited data. When they say "unlimited", they usually mean after a certain amount (5GB or so) they'll slow your speeds Way down, to 2G speeds. And usually, once your speeds are slowed down, it blocks you from using hotspots.

Even if you had unlimited hot spot data. It would be extremely slow.
