How to dispute this 911 misuse fine?

I have an iPhone and my 6 year old niece was playing on Siri. I did not notice what she had done until I heard "calling 911". I quickly took the phone and hung up but they still visited my house. Even after I tried to explain what she had done, they still gave me a $300 911 misuse fine. Is there anyway I can dispute this fine? Or do I just have to suck it up and pay?

I'd just ask for a hearing before a judge. You make a reasonable case and I do think you might find a judge who would reduce it or throw it out if you can present reasonable facts to back this story up and have no real prior issues with the law.

Yes. Next time answer the phone and explain 911 was dialed by accident so they don't spend time and money finding out who called. For all they knew you had been attacked.

Every police agency in the country will respond to a 911 hangup call as an emergency. Even if you call back and say everything is OK, they will still come.

Having said that, a ticket and fine for a 1st offense is very unusual. If this is the 1st time this has happened, you need to go to court and talk to the judge. If this was actually the 12th time this month, then just pay the fine.

So you really did misuse the 911 system, and you want to dispute the fine because you don't feel like paying for a service you improperly used?

You can ask for a hearing with a judge and see if they will go easy on you.

If I were the judge you'd be paying the fine AND court cost because you aren't supposed to let children play with your phone unattended and if you do YOU are responsible for the outcome. The fact of the matter is false emergency calls cost money and I don't want my taxes to pay for your mistake in using Siri as a babysitter.

Kids playing with expensive phones is not a good idea. Many things happen from random 911's to breakage. Rules are they have to follow up on all calls, that cost money and time. Even could have cost someone a life.

  • What should I do if I called 911? Last night I was with friends and my phone must've turned rebooted. My SIM card is locked so upon starting up the phone will ask for a four digit password you can also choose to dial SOS. Just now I looked at my recent calls and saw that I had called 911 last night without my knowledge. The call was placed around 2:30 and it lasted about 34 seconds. Anything I should do. My cell phone carrier is AT&T and I broke my iPhone so I know use a trac phone with my iPhone SIM card. Any advice!
  • What happens if you accidentally call 911 and hand up? So I was at school and my phone was in my bad and I have the iPhone 11 which I think has an emergency call button which makes it easy to do that by accident. I hear that sound it makes when it makes an emergency call and I tried to stop it as soon as I could I hung up and should not have done that I realized but at the time I didn't know what to do. Like I'm worried now.
  • My iphone will only let me call 911,what should I do? I brought a iPhone 4s (verzion) off a friend at work, thinking I could unlock it. When I hit the home button it says " Iphone is disabled. Connect to ITunes". But when I connect to iTunes to restore it, it tells me that I need to enter a Passcode on the device. But the phone only allows me to call emergency calls only… What should I do?
  • Make 911 calls with a Iphone that does not have service? With the old phones from the 90s and stuff you could still dial 911 even if the phone was not active. Is this true for iPhones? If I disconnect my iphone could I still use it to make a 911 call?
