Your screen brightness is likely too low and it's probably too bright where you are. If you have iOS 7 you can change the brightness without unlocking. Turn the screen on and then swipe up from the bottom of the screen all the way to the top. This should open up command center. Now, in the vertical center of the screen will be the brightness slider. If it's dark the slider would be around half and inch from the left edge of the screen. Start from there and just start sliding to the right until the brightness goes up.
Instead of guessing where it is you could also cover it from the light and look in. You should be able to see the slider if the phone is shaded.
