Will the phone in rice trick still work?
On Sunday night (it's currently Wednesday evening) I accidentally dropped my iPhone in a glass of water with about an inch or so of water in it (so only about an inch of my phone was submerged, the top part where the cameras are), but i dried it off with a towel right away and it seemed to be working fine so i didn't worry. However today and yesterday it's been screwing up a lot, like it'll freeze up and won't do anything like 50 percent of the time i try to use it for something, and sometimes it'll spazz out entirely and click random stuff all over the screen until i turn it off.
Anyways, is it too late to try the phone in rice thing? If it is too late, does anyone know of any quick and cheap/free fixes for this? I really can't afford to buy a new phone right now
There's no point in trying it now, days after the event.
The time for rice is Immediately --- within a minute or two,
and certainly within no more than ten minutes.
Say it with me, folks.
Rice.
Does.
Not.
Work.
It's not this magical substance that can suck water out of a phone. If it were true, you wouldn't need to cook rice because it would cook itself by pulling water right out of the air. In fact, rice would be deadly to humans BECAUSE IT WOULD SUCK THE WATER RIGHT OUT OF YOUR FLIMSY AND POROUS BODY, KILLING YOU.
If you drop your phone in water, you should IMMEDIATELY remove the battery. Then remove any SIM or SD cards.
Lay everything on a paper towel, and set this in a warm sunny spot for at least 24 hours.
Afterwards, when you are 100% certain that everything is completely dry, plug the battery back in, cross your fingers, and try to power up the phone.
IF YOU ARE LUCKY, everything will be fine, and you can power the phone back off and re-insert the card(s) before powering back on.
It will work as well now as it ever would.
NOT AT ALL.
If a phone has got slightly damp & moisture has not got beyond the external connectors, it has a chance of drying out without permanent damage, rice or not.
Once water has got to the main circuit board etc., the only thing that has a chance of saving it is removing the battery, disassembling it and properly cleaning to remove all traces of contaminants.
Anything less will allow electrolytic corrosion to continue, even if the phone appears to start working again as it dries.
The circuit tracks and metal parts of components in the affected area are gradually broken down into metal salts, which is an irreversible process.

- Will the dry rice method still work for an iphone if it has been switched on? I dropped my phone in water and immediately took it out, dried it and turned it on to see if it worked. The phone worked but there was no sound so i googled what to do and i found the dry rice method but it said that you shouldn't turn on your phone but i did (maybe for ten mins?) so i turned it off and put it in a bag full of rice. Will the sound go back to normal because i turned on my phone? Should i put in the bag of rice with the back removed and battery exposed then?
