What happens if I restore my iphone?

I have 4.8 GB of "other" on my iphone, and I'd like to finally get rid of it all. The best way, I've heard, is to restore your phone. I have never intentionally "backed up" my iphone, and manually saved everything, but apparently every time you sync your phone, it automatically backs up. I'm just terrified I will lose all of my pictures and music once restoring, so is there a way to see what is being backed up? Or will they all be there if I just synced it?

Back up your photos and music in a folder on your computer if it isn't already on the hard drive. Make a backup of your phone, then apply reset. That way everything will still be available. If you try to restore without the files on your computer, they will not be there in the sync.
