Why has my Wi-Fi gotten so slow?

I've had quite a few issues with the Wi-Fi where I live over the past 7 months. It'd go out often, go really slow, not work at all, etc. I thought it was possibly the computer I was using since the Wi-Fi worked fine on my iPhone most of the time.

I got a MacBook Pro for Christmas and when I got it the Wi-Fi was super speedy, but lately, I'd say within the past week it's Really slowed down on all my devices. Like sometimes it's fine, but other times, like now, it's taking forever to load pages and images, etc. The computer itself is fast, so I know it's a Wi-Fi issue. I was thinking of having my cable company come out soon and replace my modem (I don't know how old it is).

Is it possible that my modem is outdated or not receiving a strong signal and that's what's slowing my Internet speed down? Or is there something on my computer I can tweak to make it go faster? The Internet is slow on my phone though too and I find myself having to switch to 4G a lot since the Wi-Fi is slow laggy.

You need 30megs

Probably your bandwidth. You should try upgrading your modem, and if that doesn't work upgrade your service.

Try changing the channel on the router and see if that speeds things up.

I like Paul's answer. But here's more info on that topic:

- There are 11 "channels" that most home routers are able to use.
- When several nearby routers use the same channel, they can interfere with each other and slow things way down.
- There's usually a setting in your router's configuration screens that allows you to select a specific channel or some routers even have an "auto" setting. This auto setting allegedly checks for the presence of other routers on a channel, and if it finds one -- selects a different channel. I usually just manually change mine.
- You usually need to be connected to your router via Ethernet in order to change your router's settings. Google your router's model and find the correct User Guide. It should tell you how to access your router's config settings.

Call the cable company to check things out and also consider a new wireless router.

It sounds like your router and modem are separate devices. One of the best troubleshooting steps that can be taken whenever you notice your internet slowing, or not working properly is to power cycle the modem and router. If this resolves your issue, then you know that one of the two was just bogged down with traffic and had not cleared itself as it is supposed to.

This happens frequently with consumer grade modems and routers because they are made to be affordable to your internet service provider to ship out tons of them, and to make them affordable to the average home internet using consumer.

To power cycle your set up, simply unplug the devices, wait a few seconds and plug them back in. Give them about 5 minutes to connect to the internet and fully initialize and test your speed again. You can use a service like speedtest.net before and after to see if your internet speeds have improved or stayed the same.

If after power cycling, you notice no change in internet quality, my suggestion is contact your internet service provider to see if perhaps your equipment needs to be replaced or serviced.

  • Why has my Internet gone so slow? My Internet speed a month or so ago used to be pretty fast, I don't know exact numbers. But after I recently got my iPhone and had been installing new apps, music etc my home broadband has got a lot slower and now only get around speeds of 0.70mbps. Is there any way I could increase this? I already got a new asdl filter. If I left it alone for a while ( going away for 2 weeks) would it get faster? I'm on BT btw
  • Why could i have gotten a text message with no text box? Yesterday morning, I looked at my smart phone ( android) and I got a text from someone. I clicked on the contact's text and there was no message, no blank bubble, nothing. It just looked like one of us was getting ready to start a conversation but no message was sent. (Extra info: I may be wrong but I think this certain contact has an iphone.) What could cause this? I don't want to ask the person because it would be extremely awkward.
  • Someone local has 10 New iPhone XSs. He says he buys in bulk. How on earth could he have gotten them? I can't imagine it being from a drug deal because how would he get so many new. I haven't heard of any stores having theft recently. Can someone explain this to me?
