You could always 1. Not talk to people you should not be talking to (I'm assuming you are a minor trying to hide something from your parents) or 2. Pay your own phone bill if you are not a minor.
Watsapp is the most popular texting app in the world, but there are a ton of others.
Skype can do both text and video call, and so can Google voice.
