As my iPhone 4 has came off contract would it be automatically unlocked?

I can't say for certain, but I know at least in the USA that having a phone come off contract does NOT automatically unlock it - it still remains locked to the original carrier. You still need to manually unlock it if and when you want to do that.

No it will not. The phone is locked to the sim cards network that you first put in the phone. If you want it unlocked you can try your network and they might. Or go to a 3rd party to get unlocked. It will void manufacture warranty. But after having i guess a 2 year contract, there warranty is only 1 year.
