Brought an iPhone 5 from Apple UK Store - is it unlocked?
I brought this handset from a Apple UK Store in London (as a handset only) - did not buy the contract…
I input my GiffGaff sim into it. Is it locked by GiffGaff's network (they run on o2)?
I heard that iPhone are locked by the first sim that is put in for a certain amount of time? Is this true? Were this true for older models like iPhone 4S?
I went into the store and asked and this advisor said if it's handset only then it's not locked. He also said that Apple store don't lock phones to a network so it is unlocked. But i'm not so sure… Am sure it probably locks it to the first sim… Or maybe i'm wrong or maybe it is no longer the case for newer iPhone models.
Anyone know?
The IMEI number will be held on Apple's database as an unlocked iPhone, so you shouldn't have any problems. It was the same for all iPhones.
Phones are locked to a network by the network provide, not the supplier, changes are made to the firmware by the network to lock the phone to their network. Putting a sim in a phone can't change the firmware.
It is not locked, it won't be locked no matter what sim you put in it.
You say your 'Heard that iphones are locked by the first sim put in'. Who told you that? The same people who said iOS 7 makes your phone waterproof?
Apple say the phone is not locked and won't become locked.
Apple make it, they should know better than random people on the net.

---No. If the phone was sold unlocked then that's how it will remain. Never will lock.

---If I remember correctly the iPhone 4 was the 1st to be offered unlocked, but either way the same applies. Unlocked phones remain unlocked.
