Because unlocked iPhones are GSM phones and Boost Mobile uses a CDMA network because it's a MVNO (and owned) by Sprint. You could, however, take that unlocked iPhone and activate it on a GSM carrier such as AT&T or T-Mobile. CDMA and GSM are not compatible with each other.

Unlocked iPhones can be connected to any carrier. Just check the GSM/CDMA compatibility

Boost Mobile is a CDMA carrier, not GSM where unlocked phones matter. As far as getting one on that network it would be a matter of if they would or not.
- Virgin Mobile or Boost Mobile? I'm moving to Houston this summer and I'm looking for a cheaper cell phone plan. I talk, text, email, fb etc. I had virgin mobile back in 2004 and I love it and had no problem. I have a android galaxy s3 right now which I love but the battery isn't so great. I'm thinking about possibly buying an iPhone. What I'm really looking for is reviews on virgin and boost mobile. If you have any other cheap cell phone plan carrier suggestions I'm up for that too.
