Can i buy an iPhone in the US and use it here?

I want to buy an iPhone 5s in America and was wondering can I use it in Ireland? Do i have to unlock it? Can I use a vodafone or O2 sim in it?

Yeah, you could, but why? It will be cheaper in the long run if you just get one there…

You could buy it, but then yes, you will have to unlock it. You would either need to get one directly from Apple (that isn't associated with any carrier) or buy one locked to AT&T or T-Mobile and get them to unlock it for you. It would have to be an AT&T or T-Mobile phone. Verizon, and Sprint phones will not allow you to put a European SIM card into them. Hell, Sprint doesn't even use SIM cards and Verizon only uses them for 4G.

Getting one from a smaller carrier may also work as they all basically use towers from one of the four major carriers. However, you'd, again, have to get one that uses AT&Ts system.

You would have to buy it "off-contract" and get a model that will connect to to mobile networks in Ireland. When you take it back to Ireland you would be liable for import duties which mean you could well end up paying more for your your US bought iPhone with no warranty than you would if you bought it locally!

Would have to be an unlocked GSM version. You would have to check to see what networks are compatible with it

Yuo. You could!

Yes but you will have to pay full price, not the contract price.

  • When will my iphone 5s ship and get here? Okay so today i went to att and ordered the iphone 5s 16gb model and they said it would ship in 7-14 days so i was wondering does anyone ever get it earlier and does it really take that long and also when will it get to my house after its shipped?
  • Is there a portable Wi-Fi that I can use here in states? I'm here in states on a vacation and I have my iphone 5 with me that I use in Japan, but I can't use here in states unless I connect to a Wi-Fi. I really need my iphone 5 for navigation and reference when I go out especially in New York. I saw that there's a portable Wi-Fi thingy but I don't know what it's called or how do I get it.
