Is there a portable Wi-Fi that I can use here in states?

I'm here in states on a vacation and I have my iphone 5 with me that I use in Japan, but I can't use here in states unless I connect to a Wi-Fi. I really need my iphone 5 for navigation and reference when I go out especially in New York. I saw that there's a portable Wi-Fi thingy but I don't know what it's called or how do I get it.

My mum has a hot spot and you can buy them at the phone store like Verizon and stuff they are not a lot of money either

Yes there are a few, from AT&T, Verizon and I believe Sprint and they are called mobile hotspots, but I believe they all require contracts and aren't very cheap and not really worth it in your case in my opinion but if you need it that bad and have money to blow then guess they would be perfect for what you need.

I have one from Verizon. I think you can get one without a contract like TracPhones which are throw a way type phones. Go to a dollar store like Family Dollar or something similar and see if you can get one there. The 4G LTE from Verizon is very good. Battery life is excellent about 10 hours or more.

Here is Verizon and a review of Walmart.

Wi-Fi is just a substitute for wires for a few feet. It has to be connected to something.

Your iPhone is a portable Wi-Fi thingie, but that doesn't do you much good, does it?

I suggest talking to your carrier about roaming.
