Can I Do This to Avoid a Data Plan?

I have AT&T.
I want a smartphone without paying the data plan because my parents refuse to pay it. I don't want the iPhone or anything, just an Android. So I read online about doing so by getting an unlocked smartphone from another carrier and AT&T won't know because it doesn't support it. If I don't use 3/4G. Just Wi-Fi, would this work?

Well yea mines works when I just use the Wi-Fi. I'm lik you and don't have a data plan so I use Wi-Fi to browse the internet. I'm not sure if the Wi-Fi will let you answer call or anything lik that I highly doubt that

Yes, This can be done.

BUT, The key to your question is that you use AT&T.

AT&T uses the GSM Cellular communications.

T-Mobile uses GSM cellular communications. It doesn't matter if you know what that is or not… The point is that, AT&T also uses GSM cellular communications. All of the other major US Carriers use CDMA cellular communications.

My point is… You can't take a phone from Verizon, Sprint, US Cellular or Alltel and use it at AT&T.

Now with that said… I would suggest an Android Phone.

On an Android phone… Go into settings --> wireless & network --> mobile networks, and uncheck data enabled. This will allow you to access data on Wi-Fi ONLY.

  • What is data in a Verizon data plan? I just got an iphone 5 and am having some trouble. I know that data includes email, accounts and any internet websites (facebook, youtube, netflix). Does it use up data to have multiple internet browsers open even though I only look at one at a time? Is it possible to use up data when the phone is off? Also, is taking a picture, playing app games, listening to music, and siri considered to be "data" on the data plan? Is there an overall explanation for what a data plan is?
  • Multiple smaller checks to avoid the $1000+ funds availability hold at USAA? I have USAA and I plan on using the Deposit@Mobile method of depositing with the USAA iPhone app. I want to deposit $1200 on Monday but I need the funds a few hours after I create and scan the checks in. I plan on using two $600 checks to bypass the $1000 funds availability hold regulation (that is federally enforced, to my understanding). Any potential blow back?
  • How to find out my data plan and how much data I have left? I just get an iPhone and I got the smallest data plan I could. I really don't want to go over and I want to know how much data I have left! I've gone to settings, general, and usage to where it brings up sent and received and I don't understand all of that? Can someone help?
  • How to avoid using so much Data? I used to have Verizon unlimited everything. Now they brought this data plan($$$) were I'm allowed just 10GB a month for two iPhones. I'm already on 8GB used and I still have 18days to go. What can happen is I go over? How can I avoid using so many GB? Should I use Wi-Fi at home?
