Can I iMessage someone from another country using my email?

I recently bought an iPhone and I want to know if I can iMessage someone from Australia using my email and will my phone company charge me for it? My Aussie friend managed to send me a text, but will it charge me if I reply to his number using my email?

IMessage uses data and is like email.iMessage goes through apples servers not the phone carriers. As long as the recipient is BLUE - iMessage you are good. Type it before you send to test it

  • Will i be charged if someone texts me from another country? My friend took a day trip to Canada yesterday (we live in the us) and was texting me the whole day. She said that since we both had iphones and were using iMessage that we wouldnt be charged, but she had Wi-Fi for a couple hours and while she was using the Wi-Fi she got charged for roaming since she wasn't using 3G. Will i be charged as well? It was in a group chat with two other girls as well and they are also worried. We're all on Verizon 3G plans
