Can I turn a Garmin etrex into a GPS tracker?
I'm wanting to send a weather balloon up to take some video, but I don't want to use my iPhone to track it. Is there any way to allow my etrex to behave as a tracking device?
Just turn on the tracking function on the GPS. If you are looking for altitude measurements, you have to realize that the vertical accuracy of the gps signal is much worse than the horizontal accuracy. The exception is the Vista which has a barometric altimeter that will be more accurate (when calibrated) than the altitude part of the GPS signal.
Most of the Etrex family can hold 10, 000 points which is good for about 2 1/2 hours with the recording set to once a second or 8 hours with a 3 second recording rate. (I use the three second rate when on my skates to record the route of trails)
The etrex units with an H after the name have a better receiver than the earlier ones. The track will be much more accurate. Of course, the lack of any trees or objects between a balloon and the satellites will make the accuracy better.
The ones with an X after their name can record an almost unlimited number of location points to a micro SD card. It will break the tracks into 24 hour segments but can hold as many of them as the card has memory.
If you mean to fide it, not by itself. You need some device to transmit its received location to you or a mobile service.
- Which company makes better GPS systems? Apple or Garmin? Thinking of getting a brand new GPS and I can't decide between Apple iPhone 6+ or the Garmin Nuvi 255W
- Is there any way I can see on my iPhone if there's a GPS tracker? My parents split up but they still share the same verizon account. My mom and I were pretty suspicious that my father has been reading our texts through the account and driving by our apartment complex. Last night I went to my friends to feed their cat and as I was walking out I caught him driving by with absolutely no excuse to be there. I feel like I'm being followed wherever I go now, so is there any way I can check that he has a tracker on my phone?
- Is the Garmin App for iPhone an offline app? I'm wondering that because I'm considering buying an iPhone and don't want to waste data while I drive and am looking for an offline navigation app that provides turn by turn directions. Here's a link to it: https://itunes.apple.com/...90305?mt=8 And also what about the TomTom one?: https://itunes.apple.com/...89842?mt=8
- If my iPhone is being tracked by GPS not using any apps, how do I turn it off from my phone? Can I just turn off my location services or do I have to do something else? Will putting my phone on airplane mode do the trick? (the gps system is not using cellular data)
