Can police trace a mobile number?

I put an advert on Gumtree earlier today to sell my new iPhone 5 as I needed the money and decided to keep my old phone.

A boy responded to the ad and text and called me from 2 different numbers.

He came tonight and robbed the phone out of my house, along with my handbag while my 2 year old daughter was in the room.

I'm really shaken up and angry and have no insurance.

Can police trace the 2 numbers he called and text me off? One of which is still ringing and goes to answer phone.

Can they also trace the iPhone 5 from the IMEI number?

They have also taken fingerprints.

Thanks in advance

Added (1). I have given the police both the numbers he called from. I think he was using his own phone as he should of cake to see the phone last week but I was busy and he was still using the same number. I've got friends who work at the mobile networks see ongoing the phone numbers are registered to an account address. If it kills me I will find him, even if the police don't!

I would recommend giving the police the numbers that he called you from. They probably won't help though. Unless he used his own phone--which he may have as criminals are sometimes stupid.

  • Why is mobile sending number different to my number? I recently bought an Iphone and did a sim swap so I could keep my phone number. Everything has been ok. However, when I send an imessage it shows the recipient a different number to mine. I don't think this happens when I send a SMS. Presumably it's the original number for the new sim? Why is this?
  • My iPhone 4s was recently stolen, can i trace it? Can i trace my stolen iPhone 4s? I have a fair idea of the person responsible although i can't prove it. can anyone help me?
  • Is there a app on iPhone where I can trace how far I ran? I'm goingt to start going running and want a app where I cud time and see how far I run and show on a map or something
  • How did the police track my number down? A week ago, i found a iphone6 in the bathroom so i put it in my pocket, it was dead already. FYI i have the same phone so i had no intent to use it. I put it in my coat pocket. This morning I received a call from the police asking about an iphone but i'm at work at the moment so i can't really call back. I realized I still had the lost phone in my coat pocket at home. It got me thinking on how and why did they get my number in the first place?
