Can the iphone's camera sensor be converted to Infrared?

I have a spare iPhone and was wondering if its censor can be modified to shoot IR in the same fashion that a traditional DSLR's sensor would be modified. Yes, I'm aware that the sensor is tiny!

for instance:

Umm I don't honestly know but i bet there's a possible way to do it and that would bee cool let me know if you find out!

As soon I saw your question (and before I read the details), I thought to myself: "I'll tell this person about www.lifepixel.com and give him the link".

Looks like I don't need to do that:-)

Interesting question, why don't you write to the life pixel crowd and ask? I'd love to hear the answer, too!

Not sure about newer iPhones, but some earlier models already capture IR. (This is how I tell if my remote control needs new batteries.) If you can get your hands on a visible light filter, you could try for yourself. Whether the camera app will actually take a picture if it can't see visible light remains to be seen-I don't think it would have enough IR light to focus, even in broad daylight.

I highly doubt anyone other than an Apple engineer would know whether the sensor could be modded, not that they would allow it.
