Both, but they provide better service if you have an appointment
Depends on the store and how busy they are when you walk in with your issue. The techs in the back my be slammed, so if you are asked to come back with an appointment at a later time or day, you know right then that that store is pretty busy, at least in the back.
You could try to take it in but seeing as how the Apple Store is always crowded and busy, they would probably tell you to make an appointment and come back. So I would make an appointment
