Cell phone plans for US citizen living abroad in Europe for 3 months?
I will be living in Barcelona, Spain for 3 months in the summer and I want to bring my cell phone with me from the US and use it while I'm there. I have an iPhone 6 that's out of contract with Verizon which I will unlock before I move.
I will be traveling within Europe occasionally, every other weekend, and I don't know what will be my best strategy for having a cell phone plan with adequate data (4+ GB) while I live in Spain as well as when I travel to other European countries.
Most of Europe's plans now include full and free roaming throughout the EU.
and the EU parliament put tight limitations on the cost of calls/data when roaming anyway
Come summer of 2017, roaming charges are supposed to be abolished completely.
Spanish networks

Just get a SIM when you arrive.
Best place - any Vodafone or other shop in Spain
yes, you may get one at the airport if they are promoting them. But best at the shop

SIM ONLY

So any 30 day plan will be fine.
even a PAYG (Pay as you go or US 'prepaid' plan) SIM will do.
teh ONE THING you will need to do
is make sure you have unlocked your phone before you leave
That usually means putting a different network SIM in… To force it to unlock (and you may need to sync it again with iTunes) - so get a different SIM (borrow a friends?) to check / do that before you leave.
If you need to pay to unlock - a small fee to Apple, so be it
- Which do you recommend? Iphone 5s Smart Plans or Iphone 5s Globe Plans? I'm confused. I've heard a lot of negative comments about globe internet speed and secret extra charges. But it seems that there are more recommendations to go for globe iphone plans. What's wrong with Smart? Which is more advisable for first timers in mobile plans?
- Which camera should I bring? Studying abroad in London/Travelling Europe? I have these options: a DSLR Nikon camera, a Sony videocamera (small), or should I buy a digital camera? In addition, i'm bringing my iPhone 5s, which has pretty good quality as well. I'm just afraid I'll lose my DSLR, should I buy a digital camera or take the small videocamera? Suggestions? I will be studying for a semester in London and traveling to a few countries in Europe as well.
- What cell phone, and company, is the best for someone who just listens to music, streams shows/videos, and texts? Cheapest plans/phones? I occasionally talk on my phone, and/or take photos. Also, can I still get the food/ride share apps if I don't have an IPhone? I live in a mid-sized city in the mid-west. (over 100,000 pop. And over 70 square miles)
- IPhone 4S Cell-phone plans on Sprint? How much does Unlimited Data, Text, and 300 calling minutes cost monthly? I couldn't find the price on Sprint's website. If you do find information, please give me the link of where you found this info.
