Charging your device over night safe?

My mom just saw a news headline that said some girl died because her iPhone exploded while charging. On top of that the news had a few pictures of other victims. Now she wants me to not charge my phone on my bed stand because its too close to my bed…

Is my mom just overly paranoid or is taking such precautions necessary?

Very recently, there was a story about a girl in a bathtub who died picking up her phone while it was charging in the bathroom.

Half of Americans charge their phone on their bed stand. There's nothing to be concerned about. I have never heard of an exploding cellphone. Your mom is being overly paranoid.

Headline from two days ago:

Your phones made to be safe when charging and made to not overheat when plugged in and fully charged it's a 1 in one million chance it'll blow up or catch on fire

About 1 billion iphones have been produced, this is the first explosion I have heard of so 1 per billion risk. I would risk it, but then again I drink glasses of water!
