Does home owners insurance typically cover stolen items?

My ex boyfriend came to my house when I wasn't here and stole 5,000 worth of items. A Michael kors watch, some diamond jewelry, an iPhone and a Louis Vuitton. I already filled a police report but most likely won't ever get my stuff back. Should I file an insurance claim? How does it work?

Yup, the insurance will pay with a copy of the police report,
, you'll have to pay your deductible, mines is $3,000
this will make your insurance go up

Did he have a key?
Home Owners Insurance will usually cover most contents. However, there's a deductible amount that you
would have to pay first if your claim was for more than the deductible.( usually $500.- $1000.)
Another problem could be, that if the stolen items are very valuable, and you didn't itemize them all
separately with their individual values at the time of purchasing your insurance, they might not be insured
under your present policy. Contact your insurance immediately. You will need proof that you actually
owned these items that were stolen.

Yes, you should file a claim on your homeowners insurance. Make a list of what is missing, give the insurance claim rep any receipts or photos that you can find and any other insormation like serial numbers for the phone, watch, ect. Make the claim and they will tell you what you need to do. The more information you provide the better.

There are a lot of "ifs" on this type of claim.

IF his name wasn't included on the policy, AND you file a police report AND press charges, AND your policy doesn't have a theft exclusion, you'd have limited coverage under your policy. Jewelry, collectables, cash, and several other things, are subject to a "special limitation of coverage" for loss by theft.

The insurance should pay for your loss, to the extent you have any sort of proof of the value, and they can also sue your ex, if they can find him, for restitution if not actual return of the goods.

YOU do not get to determine guilt.
File your insurance claim, and do not defame or you may regret it.

Only if he didn't have a key & you were not home when he broke in. If he was allowed in or had a key they will not cover. How do you know it was him?
