Does tethering iPhone to desktop use Wi-Fi or data?

I have a desktop computer with no Wi-Fi receiver. I do however have Wi-Fi from the college I goto, but no wired cable. I can plug in my iPhone and turn on the hotspot function on the phone and get Internet on the computer. The iPhone is connected to the Wi-Fi network.
My question is, does my computer then use my iPhone data, or the Wi-Fi my phone is receiving?

I've never tethered with an Iphone but with Android it used my data, so be careful.

Your desktop would then be using the data from your cell carrier. Whenever you tether a phone to a device it defaults to the carrier's signal.

Please vote up my answer if this helps you.

Chronicle is correct.

  • Would their be any Wi-Fi tethering apps on a jailbroken iPhone 3GS? Apart from paid apps (MyWi) and useless apps (PDANet), would their be any free wi-fi tethering apps on the Cydia store. I will appreciate and value your responses.

  • Tethering iPhone to computer on Wi-Fi - does this use data? So the internet in my room is terrible, but for some reason my iPhone connects just fine. When I tether my iPhone (connected to Wi-Fi) to my macbook, the internet works. Because I'm using Wi-Fi on my iPhone while tethering, is this using data?
  • Is there a certain kind of Laptop required when tethering Wi-Fi to it by iPhone? I have an iPhone 6s (if that matters) and I'm looking for a laptop for work. I work from home, with Wi-Fi, but landed a 2nd job babysitting full time. They do not have Wi-Fi in their home. I heard I can tether internet to a laptop from my phone while I'm there- but I'm unsure if that applies to all laptops, certain kinds, or ones with certain features.
