Help on choosing a room color?

The last time I painted my room was when I was 10 and it's a bright orange color and I thought it was cute at the time but as the years went on it became very overwhelming and when I go to take a picture with my iPhone it always looks like there's a cheesy bright orange filter and it looks so bad. So now that I'm 15 I want a more mature less overwhelming color and I was thinking of purples or blues, should I go for the darker shades or the lighter shades? I kind of like the thought of a dark purple but I don't want to end up regretting it like I did with the last color.

A lighter color brightens a space & makes is appear bigger while dark or bright colors define a space.
Dark purple is a great color but painting all the walls dark will close in the space and make it seem small & crowded.
Unless you have a wall of floor to ceiling windows or long windows on more than one wall, dark walls will make a space look smaller.
I'd either do light purple (and I mean light, almost white) walls to open up the space and use dark purples for furniture, fabrics, decor & accents.
If you are set on dark purple walls do one or two walls that color to define the space and then use a lighter color that matches for the rest of the room to keep it from feeling tight.

Not sure how big your room is, but darker colors tend to make a room smaller. Think about this: Paint the wall where your bed lye a darker then the other three walls. This would pose as your accent wall.

You could go with the accent wall and a couple of stripes of purple on the opposite wall or the two side walls. It would give the room depth. In this case I would paint the other walls white. Not sure what your bedding is like and if it will go with the purple. Maybe it will go with the blue.

The lighter shade

The orange will be look out of date when times goes. I prefer light blue.

Go for two colors. Purple is nyc but i would say select a lighter shade and team it with some other color and do alternate walls. Its not boring and appears to have a huge space.purple and off white color like cream or some very light shade of purple.

Go for the light shades, use wallpaper if you'd like to. What about beige or fawn or maybe light brown.
they give an elegant feel to the room and will make you feel good about your room.
