Honest thoughts about my photography?
I used my iPhone for photography and want an honest opinon. Also, would you suggest I buy an actual camera and try to do something with my skill (If I have any?)
I think you have potential but let me tell you as a long time photographer. Photography is 30% skill 70% vision. Everyone can learn skills given enough time & dedication, but vision is something much higher and more abstract and 99.99% of photographers lack (me included). If you are serious about photography, learn the basic (namely skills), and then move onto vision as soon as possible and you will be far ahead of everyone else. Most people are dwelling on skills and gears all their life with nothing worthy to show for.
I wish I could give Alan more than just one thumbs up.
Just about anyone can learn the fundamentals of photography, although it could take a year or two to get to the point that the camera is an extension of what your creative mind sees.
And like Alan says, your ability to compose brilliant images each time you hold the camera to your eye can take many more years of studying art and the photographs created by the masters of our time.
Fill your mind with some of the images painted by the painters whose work shows realism, especially with the way light is painted in to the work of art and how it seems to be actual light, not just paint on a canvas.
Be patient and take your time. It took me about two years to make the camera part of my vision and another ten living with a fine artist to understand light, colour balance and composition.
You want an honest opinion? Well, your photography isn't that good. Now don't get me wrong, it isn't bad per say, but I know you can do So much better. If you want to get better (the fact that you asked this question in the first place means you probably do), than I'd recommend learning the rules of composition, which are, perhaps, the most important part of photography.
The Rule of Thirds is the most basic. Just imagine an evenly spaced grid at 1/3 increments and place your subject on one of this lines or the cross section of said lines.
Here's a video to explain the rule much better:
And than there's Leading Lines, which it seems you already are aware of:
Now, in these videos, the host uses a higher end camera, but the quality of the camera doesn't matter with composition. Grant it, higher quality cameras do make photos look prettier, but I have seen some AMAZING images taken with exactly what you have. So I'd recommend taking the time to really learn these rules (There are more that just what I stated. Just google 'Rules of Composition and you should find most the basics) before you buy an expensive dSLR.
Honestly?
They would have been acceptable snaps if you hadn't added that horrible low contrast/flare effect.
Basically the effects have totally ruined them.
In all seriousness… IPhone? NO! Do your self a favor and get a low cost digital camera for starters. 5 year olds can "click" with an iPhone. The pictures I glanced at only show that you can control a "point and shoot".
There's so much to learn about taking incredible pictures. So search online at websites of photography theory. One needs to know all the features on a camera, types of lenses, filters, on and on. You have a lot of potential and your interest is great. Have fun.
- Thoughts on buying iPhone 1st generation in 2013? Not to use as a phone! (I have the OG Atrix for that) but as a collectors item/something that could hold alot more value in the future. You can get the original iPhone for 50-80 dollars on ebay in pretty good condition, do you guys think that buying a few of them to hold on to would pay off at all in the future (5-10 years from now) when people will begin to want them as collectors items? Or does it not really matter at all once they've been used does that make them junk?
- Technophiles: Next iphone release? Your thoughts? Hey so i need to upgrade my phone but i don't want an android (for now) and i don't want the iPhone 5 because it sucks, when do you think the next iphone will come out? In October? Will it be 5s or iPhone 6? I can't wait forever because my current iphone has a cracked screen and god knows when it will just die completely I'm not an apple-worshipping iphone fanatic i just want iphone cuz i can imessage all my friends, and we have a lot of iphone/ipod/ipad gadgets at home.
- Give your honest opinion on my photo? Please give your opinion and any critique. This was with an iPhone camera only, no editing or anything. I learned the rule or thirds after this… I now have a Nikon D3100, but this was before.
- Be honest is this kinda weird? I have this app on my iPhone & it's like a 2nd "contact book" & I like to keep contacts of people I rarely speak to & various phone numbers from old doctors dentists etc from my previous town just in case I ever had to get a hold of them or needed someone's number. Is this strange? My husband seems to think it's very odd.
