How to improve my photography? (I'm a beginner)?

I just recently started getting into photography. How can I improve? I just took my first levitation picture yesterday but it wasn't all that good.):
Who are some good photographers and who are your favorite ones? Also, I don't really have much to work with… My birthday is coming up so I can certainly ask for photography equipment. I take pictures with my Vivitar ViviCam 8025 camera, my Nintendo DSi (lol it's pathetic I know. Like, I said I don't have much to work with) and my iPhone 3g. I'm turning 14 so I don't expect people to buy me a bunch of fancy stuff but what's a good camera for beginners?

A camera is but a paint brush, it is more important who is holding the brush than which brush it is. All decent cameras can take wonderful pictures in the right hands. Spend your time studying great lighting and composition because even a great camera can't fix bad lighting or composition. And have fun with whichever brush you buy or use.
