How to update my IOS on my Jailbroken iPhone 3gs?

So I got a Jailbroken iPhone 3gs for Christmas, and it only has the IOS of 3.0, so I really can't get any apps! It has Cydia on it but I'm not sure how to take it off, and it dose not even work! I heard if I update anything Apple will shut down my phone? I really can't let my phone break, what should I do?

Your iphone go to:- setting>about phone.menu & update your 3gs phone.

First of all you will need to know if your iphone is factory unlocked or not.
if it is all you need to do is
1) to connect your iphone to your laptop
2)install itunes
3)connect your device to your computer (must be connected to the internet)
4)wait until itunes detects your device
5)itunes will notify you that your software is not up to date
6)click on download and install new software update
7)wait until itunes downloads the new software and install it on your device
8)this process can take up to 2 hours depending on your internet speed

IF YOUR PHONE IS FACTORY LOCKED!
1)you will need to download the latest version of redsnow from this link:

2)download the suitable version of your ios from this link
osxdaily.com/2010/10/25/download-iphon…
(you may need to change the file extension from zip to ipsw)
3)open redsnow and click on extras
4)choose create custom ipsw
5)browse the downloaded ios and click on ok or open or whatever
6)connect your iphone to your computer and turn it off
7)open redsnow again and choose extras
8)choose enter pwnd dfu mode
9)follow the instructions of the software
10)now your iphone is ready to accept a custom ipsw from itunes
11)open itunes which will detect your iphone in recovery mode
12)hold the shift button and click on restore
13)browse for the newly created ipsw NOT THE ONE YOU DOWNLOAD IT but the custom ipsw that name start with NO_BB***
14)wait until itunes extract the software and install it on your device

i wrote down a lot of steps in order to make it simple not to make it HARD

  • Should i update my iphone 3gs to ios 6.if yes then how its jailbroken? Its showing no service and have ios 4.2.1 installed in it so i could no longer download apps on it… So should i upgrade it to ios 6 and if yes how to do it… Its jailbroken… And will it reduce the battery life? Its also having a no service issue… Will an update will solve it?
  • My iphone 4s won't update to ios 6.1.3 iphone is jailbroken? I want to undo my jailbreak, and every time i try to update, i get this message that says "there was a problem downloading the software for iphone "ericas iphone" the network connection timed out. I don't get what this means, i'm connected to Wi-Fi, i've tried everything i have my firewall off, i updated itunes, i don't know what else to do. I have even tried retstarting my phone and that message still pops up, ANY IDEAS!

Can I update to 4.2 just by using redsn0w or do I have to update using iTunes then jailbreak?
