How to avoid roaming charges with an iPhone when traveling abroad?
I'm traveling to China from Canada in about 5 days and I want to bring my iPhone with me and i want to still be able to connect to wireless signals but I'm not entirely positive on what to do to avoid roaming charges, I'm pretty sure turning it on airplane mode and turning on the Wi-Fi would be fine but I just wanted a second opinion on what to do.
Go to settings ---general ---cellular--- and then turn off data romage
On the iPhone 5 (so it is probably similar on your iPhone), you would:
Go to Settings.
Go to General.
Go to Cellular.
Cellular Data should be turned OFF, to limit it to Wi-Fi only.
Data Roaming should be turned OFF as well.
Then you can also put it in airplane mode. However, if you turned airplane mode off temporarily, only calls/texts made while you have it off would incur charges- not data (which can run without your even knowing it so important to have those turned off except for Wi-Fi).
With an example in words
after restarting your phone the device is looking for the strongest signal but mostly not the cheapest one
thus in your config menu set all the switches on off
and read all the messages on the screen before any confirmation
- Will I still be paying roaming charges if my iPhone is on airplane mode? I live in canada an my brother got a huge bill for roaming charges when he went to new York without even calling or texting. I'll be going to new York tomorrow and I would like to know if my phone will be roaming on airplane mode
- Will I be charged if I receive an oncoming call while traveling abroad? I'm traveling abroad and taking my iPhone. I don't have an international package so I'm not planning on making any calls or sending messages. However, what if someone calls me instead? What will happen if I ignore the call and let it go straight to voicemail? Will I get charged for it?
- Using Iphone 5 abroad/ while travelling without roaming? I'm travelling to the US to go on a cruise very soon and i don't want to pay roaming charges, can i just remove the sim card and use it just for the camera? I don't need to call or text (but would i be able to text if there was Wi-Fi?) all info is helpful thanks. i just want to use the phone for the camera. I don't want to call or text. should i just take out the sim card?
- Roaming and Wi-Fi charges abroad So I'm a bit confused at the moment with roaming and Wi-Fi. I'm abroad right now staying at my relatives house and both my iphone and iPad are connected to the house Wi-Fi and also put on aero plane mode. Will I still be charged even though I've got both of these on? Also if I'm not connected to the Internet but just use photos and no go on the Internet, will I still be charged? Thanks I was able to connect to a Wi-Fi while using aero plane mode.
