Will I still be paying roaming charges if my iPhone is on airplane mode?

I live in canada an my brother got a huge bill for roaming charges when he went to new York without even calling or texting. I'll be going to new York tomorrow and I would like to know if my phone will be roaming on airplane mode

Don't think so. My brother put his iphone on airplane mode when we were in the bahamas, and no charges. You don't receive calls/texts in airplane mode… But make sure you don't go on the net either
