How to Know if an Iphone 4S or 4 Can Be Used In Another Country?

My brother is in Spain and the iphones are very expensive there. I was wondering if I could buy one for him here off ebay or a site like that and give it to him for christmas.

How would I know if it is usable in another country?

If it is factory unlocked it would be usable in another country.

Only GSM iPhones will work outside the USA.

WIth the iPhone 4, only AT&T iPhones are GSM. So if you want to use an iPhone 4 outside the USA, it has to be an AT&T iPhone 4.It also needs to be unlocked, so that it will work with any SIM card, not just an AT&T SIM card.

But with the iPhone 4s, all iPhones (AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon) include GSM. So any iPhone 4s can be used outside the USA, but it still needs to be unlocked - once again so that it can work with any SIM card.

To unlock an iPhone, ask AT&T/Verizon/Sprint to do it; there are also sites online that claim to do it, and software sold online that claims to do it. I have no idea if those sites or software work.

You can also sometimes fine already-unlocked iPhones available for sale online, like on eBay.

  • Does switching stores on iTunes (from country to country) affect the apps? So I downloaded a lot of apps on my iPhone when I was in the US Currently, I'm in Canada and it won't let me switch stores back until my apple music subscription is over. My question is, when I do change back, will I have to redownload all the apps? Also when I want to update the apps would I have to switch back to the US Store?
