How to make sure apps are closed on iPhone5?

I just got an iPhone and it is the first time I have had a smart phone and an iPhone. I'm paranoid about going over my data.So, I was wondering, how do I make sure that my apps are closed? Is pressing the home button good enough? I know some are going to use data even when closed but I just want to make sure that when I close something it is closed.

No, you need to double tap your home button, bottom there you will see the apps that you minimized before, select any apps, tap it and HOLD. Afterwards, you will see all the icons are vibrating with a cross icon on your app's icon, tap the cross button and you are done.
