Put another network SIM in it. If it works, it is unlocked, it it doesn't, then obviously it isn't.
If you got it brand new from Sprint then it is not unlocked.
If its the 4 or 4s it doesn't matter, they only work on sprint.
Generally where you get the phone, if it is from a retailer then it is most likely not unlocked. If you get it from a third-party retailer, then they will usually tell you if it is locked or not.
