How would I get an iphone 3gs to work in south korea?

I live in the states right now but i will begin visiting korea for long periods of time soon. I want to get a phone over there. I currently have an iphone, as do most of my friends. I want an iphone with imessage so i can talk to them, and i kind of want a 3gs as it does everything i want. How can i make one work overseas but without a plan, like just call and texting? What kind should i get, like will just a regular unlocked one work?

You will always have a roming charge as you will be calling from Korea if i was you download Skype on to a pc to call then as for i message as long as your on Wi-Fi it should not cause a extra charge
