I bought a second hand iPhone, how do I unlock it and use it?

I'm talking about unlocking it for use on any carrier. I'm happy to have it, just don't know how to get rid of the AT&T stuff and put it back to basics before I use it with my current provider.

In most cases to do this you will have to jailbreak it, then unlock it. Ideally to do this you would have slightly older firmware. It is hard to say what specifically what specific steps you need to take because you haven't told us what version of iPhone/firmware that you have. I'm sure that if you add those details I can, or plenty of others may be able to help, or just look up tutorials for jailbreaking/unlocking on google.
