I found a lost iPhone 4s, what should I do?
I left the iPhone on for a few days but there doesn't seem to be any incoming calls. I moved the sim card to another phone but still nobody calls. The iPhone is unusable so I decided to restart it to factory setting. But, when I wanted to activate it, it says that this iPhone was reported stolen or missing, please contact the number #########.
I wouldn't want to call it, incase if the owner miss interpreted my good deeds of returning it.
You can send him this link and explain that you tried. You should call him and since you have turned the phone on and used the sim its not even safe to keep the fone with you. So better earn some goodwill.
Why would you remove the sim card or restore to factory settings? These don't help you contact the owner or give the owner a chance to track it down.
As far as the owner and anyone else is concerned, you either found it and tried to use it for yourself, or you stole it. Why else would you tamper like that?

Well you should call the number & explain yourself. Even if the police got involved if you know your intent was to return it then again explaining your side would help.
