I just got a ticket for using google maps for directions on my iphone while driving?

The officer spotted me looking down on my lap but didn't see my phone at all. After pulling me over, he stated that I was using my phone. I told him no and that I was getting directions for a delivery I was about to make. I further explained that I work as a delivery driver and I'm always looking for directions on the map. The car belongs to the company I work for. He stated because of a new law, drivers are no longer able to use the phone while driving. So he went ahead and cited me.

Is it true that a new recent law completely prohibits the use of wireless devices even for directions?

Not wireless devices
He stated because of a new law, drivers are no longer able to use the phone while driving

Yes it does… At least for cell phones. In Nevada, the new law says that ANY use of a cell phone while driving must be completely hands free.

If you want to continue to use your phone's GPS system, then get a mounting bracket that will hold the phone where you can see it without touching it. Otherwise, get a portable GPS unit and save your cell phone batteries for talking.

You need to look into your state law and tell us we have no idea what state you are from and can't answer this question. Each state has different laws. Oregon your phone must be a hands free device like a blue tooth for example. There have been far too many accidents involving people using cell phones and driving. And there have been a number of kids killed who were stupid enough to think they could drive and text at the same time as sad as that is taking your eyes off the road to write a text minutes at a time is pure lunacy these days.Iook into your state laws and see how they apply to you don't use the phone while a driving and pre plan your trips in a gps or some other device and alert your boss and coworkers to this problem so the lame *** cop does not get any more of your friends. You can probably go to court and and explain your side to the judge as what you wrote here was at least a reasonable explanation and unlike the cop the judge may like to get his packages sent to his home instead of sent to a distant land
It may be easier to pay the fine and be done with it as court may cost you half a day off work. And seatbelt tickets are not a moving violation so it does not count on your insurance.

The object of the law, which you are obviously missing, is the distraction factor. Phone, texting, Facebook, maps, etc. Are all distractions. You are going to be killed or injured or do that some other person by not paying attention while driving. Stop if you need directions from whatever source. Also, as to asking about laws, I had to give a general answer as in your state of being possessed by the iPhone you neglected to include where on the planet you happen to be driving when cited. This is normal behavior since constant use of the device puts the brain of the affected people in a sort of relaxed mode. The brain then takes a mental holiday. Stop using the phone for everything in your life. It is not as essential as you think. I do not have a smartphone since I do not need one. My brain is very sharp due to constant use and reuse. I recommend you place the phone in the OFF positions for three days, minimum, and conduct your business as best possible. I know the temptations as to maps and things as one my cars does have a navigation system. Discipline and training and constant repetition that distractions are deadly is the best way to avoid driving distracted. Stop when needed for directions. And now this is going to cost you a bit of money. Lessons learned.

  • Yelp or the new google maps for iphone? What's up guys. I recently downloaded the new google maps app for the iphone, which I believe is fantastic. I've noticed that you can search for places like restaurants, and etc, more or less like yelp does. My question is should I still stay with the Yelp app or just use google maps for looking for other stuff besides directions?
  • On iPhone/apple maps, what does the man on directions mean, running or walking? - 1 When you go onto the directions bit there's the three options, the car the bus and the man, what does that man icon mean running time or walking time?
  • Old GPS or iPhone maps or google maps app? I'm going to drive from IL down to SC and I don't trust my old garmin nuvï 255 nor iphone maps lol:-) GPS update is $50 which I'm not going to spend. So has anyone used iphone maps or google maps app on long distance trips? Or I just better use old gps?
  • Is there an app for iPhone that shuts the phone down completely while driving? I need an app that will entirely disable the phone while it's in motion. It doesn't matter about being a passenger or not; if the phone's in motion at driving speeds I want it to be disabled. Do Not Disturb While Driving is not good enough because it can be overridden by the push of a button. I want the phone to not function at all until the vehicle is stopped. This is not an issue of myself not using my phone; I want to disable my son's phone while he's driving.
