If I update my iPhone 4 will i lose everything?
Hi, I have the iPhone 4 (not 4s) and haven't updated it basically since i got it around 2 years ago. I've always been worried about updating because once my friend updated hers and she lost all her contacts and messages, photos and everything and I'm really worried I'll lose stuff, there are messages on my phone that I'm quite sentimental about and really don't want to lose. I'm aware however that I'm going to have to find a way to do something soon as my phone has such an old iOS version i basically can't download or update any apps anymore as they're all on higher versions of iOS now. I'm just scared it'll delete everything like my friend's and I'll lose the sentimental messages.
Well, it often depends on what you have saved on your iPhone. Normally, you shouldn't lose anything, iOS in fact, just updates your system. I suggest doing a backup before updating though, so that you're sure your dates, messages and settings won't be deleted unaccidentally. Just back it up
You are fine, just update it.
Plug it into iTunes and it will pop up to say there's an update, say yes. It will then ask if you want to run a full backup, say yes again.
The ipsw will download and update on your phone, it will then restore your data.
Everything will be the same as before except a new OS;
- pictures
- contacts
- apps
- emails
- recent calls
- messages
- music and video… Everything

- Will syncing my iphone on my new mac make me lose everything? I just bought a macbook air and i have my family's pc desktop also. I want to put everything from my iphone music, contacts, etc.onto my macbook air without having it getting deleted. I want to be able to put songs from my air onto my iphone.
