Increase (or disable) sms character limit?

So pre Android and iOS days, i used to have a Samsung flip phone and i used to text a lot, and i used to text long messages. Back then no matter what phone i used, my long text messages would send in pages, and the person would receive the texts in order from first page to last. I now have a Samsung Galaxy Discover (Cricket) and after you pass the character limit it converts the sms message into an mms message. So either i can continue exceeding the limit and convert the sms into an mms message (and possibly adding on to the bill of someone who may not have mms messaging on their plan) or i can stop before the limit, send the message and continue on, and do this manually over and over again. You would think years ago it would've been the opposite and we'd come from converting long sms messages into mms to it automatically sending them in pages in 2014. Is this just an Android thing? I've never owned an iPhone so i can't speak for them. My phone is rooted and i would like to stay away from downloading a third party text message app from the market. So with that being said, anybody have any links to where i may find a possible solution or have a solution themselves? Is it just an Android problem? Any and all information is welcome.

SMS is not really designed nor suited for long messages. Perhaps send an email instead?
