IPhone 4S issue: 'searching' can't find a signal?

I dropped my iPhone 4S last week… It cracked the back not a lot of damage but ever since then, at first my phone would turn its self off and not come back on for hours, that happened for a few days, but that has now stopped and doesn't seem to do that anymore. Now All i I get is 'searching' instead of my signal. I'm unable to send/receive a text or a phone call. Occasionally my signal comes back and I'm able to use to send a text etc. But that doesn't last long before it goes back to searching. I've tried restoring the phone many occasions via the phone itself. I've took the SIM card out and everything nothing works. I've now tried to restore the phone to factory resettings but my iTunes is now saying it is unable to restore the phone, so I have a screen saying connect to iTunes. What's going on with it?

I think this is a handset issue and I've reported the bug to Apple. Powering it on and off wouldn't fix the situation.
OR
have you connected the phone again to iTunes, to make sure it has the up to date carrier settings?
OR
The only thing I can thing of is to do a manual roam, if you select Settings > General > Carrier > Select a differnet netowrk and repeat and chose…
