IPhone 4S, Skype-to-Skype, International Calling, Unlimited Calls?

My son and I live in Juarez, Chihuahua, Mx but I travel on a daily basis to El Paso, Tx. I need to stay in contact with him constantly since he is still in high school and for any emergencies that might unexpectedly occur. I'm looking into cellphone service provider plans and rates for both Mexico and the US I have in mind to have service with Cricket for my phone and have his phone have service with TelCel Mexico. We both will have an iPhone 4S. I want to download and use the following apps 1) Skype, 2) Tango, and 3) WhatsApp because they are all 1) Free, 2) Can make Skype-to-Skype or Tango-to-Tango calls all around the world using VoIP, 3) Work on 3G and Wi-Fi, and 4) are compatible with the iPhone 4S. But, these are my following questions…

1) Is it possible to make a Skype-to-Skype call from the caller's and recipient's iPhone 4S for free?
2) Now Skype has an unlimited Mexico subscription, but how does that work and is it necessary for my personal case? The unlimited Mexico plan is a monthly rate of $59.99 per month for landlines and mobile numbers.
3) Another option would be purchasing a Skype dedicated and customized US number for $18.00 for 3 months or $60.00 per year and have it call forward to my son's Mexico cell phone as if it were a local number, which I will be charged $0.02 per minute.

NOTE: Do you guys have any suggestions in regards to unlimited calling, internationally calling, iPhone apps, and/or cell phone service providers?

I'm looking for plans, rates, alternatives, and options to save on my monthly cell phone bill.

Sure, you can use skype, but remember, you are still using your telephone.

If you call when not on Wi-Fi, you pay regular local rates for calling to skype.

If you call when on Wi-Fi, you only pay skype the 0.02 c/min

I use skype for all my out of country calls, and usually only call when I'm in a Wi-Fi zone.

For incoming calls from regular phones in other countries, I say: "Hi, I'll call you back."

Then I hang up and call back on my skype. The other person NEVER gets anything else but a few sec calling me, followed by an incoming call.

Cheap. At 0.2 c/min you can call an awful lot (500 min) for $ 10.00 which I usually prepay on Skype.

You don't need anything more. Save your $ 59.99 and $ 60 for a dedicated line, just use skype as I said.

  • Why are international calls barred on my iPhone 4s on EE's Tmobile network (UK)? The problem is whenever I try to call abroad, I get a message saying international calls are barred. I use to make them before I got my iPhone so I'm not sure if it's a phone problem. I've called up T-mobile many times but they tell me international calls should be working and there's no issue. Has anyone else come across this issue or know how to resolve it.
  • Skype or Facetime for calling from US A. To Europe? We're going to be in Europe for 2 weeks in September and want to know the best (and least expensive!) way to keep in contact with our kids at home in the USA We use Skype on our PC, but now that the kids have iPhones, we were thinking that Facetime might be an option. Any help here would be greatly appreciated!
  • Is there an iphone app that allows for free international calling? I currently live in america and i have a friend in canada whom i would love to call. However most apps seem to charge money per minute and id really love to be able to use Wi-Fi to call for free. We used to use viber but that app became too buggy to use anymore… Help?
  • Is there a free calling app for iphone other than skype and Google Voice? I know pinger only gives you 10 free min. And then you have to "earn" or pay, but is there a completely free app for calling within the US? Thanks! Need one that also assigns you a phone number to receive calls.
