IPhone 4S stuck on apple logo with white border?

Last night, my iphone died. This morning I plugged it in to charge it and it got stuck on the apple logo, so I decided to let it die and then try charging it again. It then got stuck on a white screen with a small white stripe towards the top. I held down the "power off/sleep" button and the "home" button at the same time, and now it's stuck at the apple logo again, except there's this white border in the corners that fades out and won't go away. When I plug it into itunes, it doesn't register.

I would try to reset it a few times again and if that don't work the I'm afraid you may have to take it to a apple store that may be you're only hope of a repair.
But on the bright side apple are really good with things like this and if they can't fix it there and then they are normally more than happy to give you another device.

At one point it showed th really low battery icon with the little red bars but now its stuck on a white background with a black apple logo and occsionally the screen goes black before returning to white screen with black apple logo do I just need to charge it for a really long time or is something wrong?
