IPhone 5 can't hear anyone on FaceTime?

I can call people fine, and people on facetime can hear me perfectly fine, but I can't hear anything they are saying. I can see them on video chat and it seems to be working fine, but I can't hear a thing. Why would this happen? Its not just one person, its multiple. It randomly happened in a facetime with my friends a few minutes ago.

Speak out loud. If you can hear yourself it is probably your phone. If not you might have Presbyacusis this is a type of hearing loss that gradually occurs in most individuals as they grow older.

Have you dropped your phone? I'd say its probably some kind of fault, can you hear people when you regularly phone them? Maybe take it back to the phone store and they'll send it off for repairs.

There's a switch on the left side of the iphone switch the thin button up and it will be out of silent mode.

Check to see what the volume level is during a FaceTime call by pressing the volume buttons. I have the volume on the speaker set to full volume and I can hear people loud and clear. Also check the silent mode switch above the volume buttons.
