Iphone 5: No text message sounds/ringer alerts?

This is my first Iphone which I've had since Christmas and up to now I've had no problems with it.
Whenever I get a text, an alert shows up but no sound is made. The same thing happens whenever I get a call too.
I've checked my settings and nothing is on silent as far as I'm aware. I've also tried turning the phone on and off but nothing seems to work.
I'm a bit of a technophobe when it comes to these things so any help is appreciated.

On the left hand side is a little switch at the top… If it is on silent you will see a bit of red…

If dnd is not active ( do not disturb) then it could either be your side switch. Also make sure you haven't turnt your ringtone volume down in settings, sounds then ringer and alerts volume.
Hope this helps

I'm having the same deal after updating to io7? I have had iPhone(s) since the first one. This is the first real problem. Very frustrating

IOS7 has given me this problem also. It is making me wish I had not updated and would like to know if it is possible to "downgrade" back to my previous system. This is beyond frustrating!

I have ipho 4s. I get no sound when receive msg. I've checked volume, side switch, etc but no luck. Sound works for incoming calls, etc, but just not for incoming message. (Does show alert, but no sound?

Make sure the do not disturb setting is off.

As basic as it may seem, if you have a headset plugged into the jack while you're trying to change sound settings, the only one that's audible is Ringtone, unless of course you're actually wearing the headset at the time.

OK, I just started having the same issue on my 5S. Volume is turned up, mute switch is off, no headphone or headset. It will vibrate, but no sound. Actually, that is not quite true. If you turn the volume all the way up, and it is a loud ringtone, you can just faintly make it out between vibrations. I didn't have this issue until upgrading to 7.1.

It is all linked to the sounds in music. Go to a program that has music, move up volume, text sounds come back. I had the same prob

I had a personal 5C and I have a work 5C. No ringing, text alerts, voicemail or email alerts. This happens whenever it decides to. I had my personal 5C replaced by Apple (at the store), the new one started doing the same thing within 2 weeks. My work phone is doing the same thing. I checked, talked with apple support and they went over and checked everything with me. Both phones were reset a couple of times all the way back to factory defaults and they are still doing the same thing. I got so fed up that I got rid of my personal IPhone 5C and went to Android. I still have my work 5C. This is extremely disappointing. I have had IPhones since the beginning, really loved them but because I was missing calls for my husbands business and everyone acts like nothing is wrong (except for a couple who did tell me they were aware of the problem and it was a hardware issue). I have done literally EVERYTHING that could be done and no resolution. No I have a $500.00 peace of nothing sitting here going to waste. Also my husbands 4S is now starting to do the same thing. My work phone and personal phone are by two different carriers.

I was having the same issue on a new iPhone and found a note on another website that mentioned a small bar/tab above the volume switch on the left side. If it is slid toward the back of the phone… No sound. Move it toward the front of the phone and your sounds come back! Amazing!

Try Settings/Notification//Measaged/Allow Notifocations

I tried opening up "music" and adjusted the volume (which was at half way) up and back down again, text sounds came back!

Same here. No incoming call or text sounds. I have checked and tried all of these and still nothing. I'm done with iphones after this.

Twiglet, did what you suggested and it is back working fine.

I tried the "Music", sound up and down thing and it did not work. Booo 7.1! I had a great Christmas anyway.

Check your Bluetooth if you are connect to Bluetooth say a home speaker, you will not get notifications from your phone. Just leave Bluetooth off at home.

Rebecca had the answer! I had to take it out of the case first before moving the upper left side switch.

Yes - it was because I had turned on bluetooth to connect to a new speaker. Turned bluetooth off and now I'm hearing the tone for incoming text messages again.

None of the above worked for me.

What shell i do

Try… Settings, Do Not Disturb, then Manual OFF (not green.)

Twiglet was right. At least on my iphone5s

Rebecca, thank you! Moving the switch did the job!

THINK I HAVE IT! If you go to "Do not disturb" setting and scroll down, you'll see where it says " Incoming calls and messages will be silenced If phone is locked. For security puposes, my phone is locked after 10 minutes of inactivity. My daughter was having the same problems with her 5… Have a 4.

I just noticed a little quarter moon up by my bluetooth logo. Don't know how the do not disturb got turned on but it was.

Yeah. I think the "do not disturb" was my problem!

Settings--do not disturb--manual--make sure it is not green

I have a iPhone 6 and had no alert tones or ringtones, just vibrations. I found the answer in one of your posts. IPhone 6 has a rubber flap just above the volume buttons on the Left side of the phone. Just lift the flap and under it you will see a switch. Move the switch so the red line is covered and all volumes are then in the ON position. Problem fixed

My problem was the bar above the volume buttons. It WAS pushed toward the back of the phone.

None of these things worked for me… Now I have only ring tone… No music, no text tone etc… Any help out there?

My 5c was, in Do Not Disturb, scroll down to the "silence" section and make sure the Always is checked. Mine was switched to "only when iphone is locked"

What worked for me was the "Do Not Disturb" was on for one individual who was was texting with mostly.

Going into music and adjusting volume worked for my 5c… Thank you!

For me, the problem was the bluetooth. It was on and connected to my sound system.

Try sliding lightly on you screen from the bottom and check to see if the DND (half moon) is on or not.

I have done everything that was said and I still don't have any sound from text messages.

Thanks Twiglet! This worked on my 5c

Thank you Rebecca! Was so woried had tried resetting but movng the button wrked

I get a sound after i text and now i lost it. How do I get it back

Thanks for this help. The switch on the side, and changing do not disturb to always are what did it for me.

Thank you, Rebecca! Didn't know about the little switch on the side!

It was the Do Not Disturb thing for me. Not sure how it got activated, but so happy to discover it and fix it, thanks so much!

Go into your text messages and see if your do not disturb is ON

The hint of going into "Messages" on the home screen and then touch "details" in upper right… There's an additional "Do Not Disturb". Turn it off… Worked for me.

My phone won't let me send any pictures or receive any on my text message. And how do I fix this

My daughter receives NO ind when I txt her. All other txt from friends to her work great and her txt to me works Settings are same on both far as I see Help!

I also had the problem of incoming text messages not making a sound but it was only from other iPhones… And it was the DND button… Thank you all! But guess what else! Once we fixed it, my daughter's iPhone texts were still silent. There was an icon in the margin that I didn't recognize. I went to "details" and found that her number was blocked from alerting, by DND. Once I turned it off, we were back in business. Hooray!

I was having the same issues with my iPhone 5c. I turned off my 'raise to speak' in Settings>Siri and suddenly my text tone started working again.

I'm new to the iPhone-craze.

I was missing a lot of important calls over&over cuz phne did not ring or vibrate frustrated by unknown cause of my silenced calls & finally discovered the miniature dnd moon

Thank you for suggesting the Details - somehow the setting in messages was turned on - hit the button and it was all set!

Corrected my ring tone which was muted when I rec'd a text… Go to cellular --scroll down to music --this was turn off… Turn it on and now work perfectly.

I lost sound on my music and texts, what I did was open my music turned volume up at end of the volume touch arrow iPhone comes up make sure top one checked
Took me hours to figure OMG
But works now!

Definitely has something to do with the music sound. It fixed my iPhone 5C today

Text message icon not populating with the number of unread text messages. I checked all settings as suggested above to no avail. Last hope I powered off and on and what do you know; it's working now!

Thanks solved my problem

If you have a Bluetooth device, the Iphone automatically switches to that when in range. If its not on you won't hear alert tones. Switch to Iphone on the pull up menu from the home screen.

Small button over sound button. Pushed it into forward position and all text notifications came back.

The small button is a mute button! Got my alert sounds back when I took my IPad off mute. Didn't know that's what that button was!

I muted a conversation in the details of one particular contact and now I don't have sound for any of my text messages how do I get the sound back?

Suddenly my iPhone would not ring when receiving a phone call, but it would sound when I received a text. Go to Settings, Do Not Disturb, scroll down to Silence and check 'Always'. It sounds weird, but it worked for me.

I found text alerts don't work in my car when hooked to the car's Bluetooth.

Discovered I had accidentally "muted" one of my important contacts in Details.

Oh thanks I tried the Do Not Disturb, scroll down to Silence and check "always". NOW it works! Yay!

The sixth response states "check your 'Do Not Disturb' button. (The shortcut icon for it is a crescent moon next to your Wi-Fi and cellular icons. Sure enough, it was on! Once turned off m, everything was fine.

I tried all the above and then out of curiosity pressed the i button next to the text message only to find yet another do not disturb alert switched on for that particular contact!

The settings, notifications, messages, allow notifications was turned off on my IPhone 5s and that was why I was not getting any text sounds, thank you Guest 04.10.2014

This just worked for me. Thanks to OP.

Works when I turn Bluetooth off?

Activate your notifications and banner setting for Pandora if you have that app. It worked for me

I get text alerts sound wise from everyone on my contact list except for two. Both of these people happen to have iphones as well but so do many of the others. Any reason for this? I've tried given them their own sounds but that didn't work either.

Thank you Rebecca!

Getting text alerts by increasing the volume in the Music app worked for me today.

Someone mentioned this earlier and it is the only that worked out of the suggestions that I have read on every website, on the left hand side of your phone is the volume adjustment, above that is a little switch, push it up instead of down and the sound returned to my messages. That was the problem the whole time.

My phone ringer was working but not my msg ing alert or number beside icon on homepage. Went to notifications msging and turned on. Now my msg alert is working and the number beside msg icon is working also. Hope this helps someone. God Bless.

Make sure bluetooth is off

The thin switch on the left side of the iPhone is a Do Not Disturb switch so when in a hospital or theater you can instantly and conveniently shut off the sounds and ringer. Simply push the switch towards the SCREEN and sounds will be turned on.

I know this is old post, but yes I still have a iPhone 5 which stopped receiving text sounds/alerts. I tried everything imaginable to resolve with no luck UNTIL I read "Twiglet's" suggestion that sounds were connected to the music settings. I opened up my Pandora, selected a sound track and sure enough, the volume was on Low. Increased volume and voila-text sounds have returned! Whew! Wherever you are Twiglet… Thank you SO MUCH! 🙏🏼

  • Will my message be delivered if sent as text message on iphone? My friend said that she was having phone problems earlier today. My message was being sent as an imessage, but I guess she wasn't receiving everyone of them, just getting the notifications that they were sent to her but she couldn't read them. I then responded to her, but it was sent as a text message this time and i have gotten no response. I'm not as much concerned about her responding or not, I just want to know if she will receive the message.
  • Why don't I receive alerts or a notification when I receive a text and I already checked my settings? I adjusted my setting and even put the ringer and notifications on and put the volume and ringer on and I receive no alert, no pop up, alert or notification when someone texts me. Why? This is the iPhone X! I went to the cell phone/ carrier store and they didn't help me. They said to go to the apple store or check the settings. I already adjusted the settings. So what do I do now?
  • My ringer on my iPhone 5c won't work on text messages? My ringer or vibrate won't work on text messages. I get the messages but it won't notify me. The ringer works for phone calls and FaceTime though
  • My iPhone 5s alerts me twice when i get a text? OKay so say I'm texting someone and my lock screen is on.It'll light up and make a sound that I have a text. And then SOMETIMES a few minutes later it'll do it again for the same text. What's wrong? In my settings it says to only alert me once.
