The combination between the hardware and software is the real thing!
Specs doesn't matters.
The Android is a big bulk, so requires high physical memory and naturally a faster processor.
iPhone has a best in class designed OS, that doesn't gave much loads to the hardware when compared with Android.
Windows Phone has similiar technology like iOS have. It works without a single lagg.
Your question reminds me of debates between gamers in the early days of dual and quad core CPU 's. Just having extra cores doesn't mean you'll have faster performance. The software has to be optimized for the hardware. Back in the 1990's some gamers started putting coprocessor s on their PC's because one game - "Falcon 3.0" was designed to use it. They didn't know that just because one game used it that others wouldn't.
There's alot more to it then just what is bigger, Apple builds alot of its own hardware so they are more efficient. Ever wonder why iphone 5's battery is so much smaller and thinner then all other phones, yet it has just as much power? Its because the technology is better. Most phones are just trying to get bigger and jam bigger batteries in it, but I don't want a car battery with me, I want it as thin and light as iphone 5 yet still improving the battery.
The numbers are 1 thing but the actual performance is another.
For example the iPhone 5 as you said is a dual core phone, & the Galaxy S III is a quad core phone but as you will see in this link, the 5 blew out the GSIII.

The integration of hardware & software is key & it shows here. Due to advancing technology the One most likely would be faster than the 5 in this case but since the next iPhone is expected to be quad core as well, we shall see.
Right now there are only 2 companies that could make the best of the hardware/software those being Apple & BlackBerry. Unfortunately BlackBerry does not seem to get it right.
- Why are Apple still using dual-core CPUs and 1GB of RAM? Other top of the rnage phones like the S4 are rocking a 1080p 5"+ display, 2GB of RAM and a quad-core CPU and yet the iPhone 5 and 5s do not even have a 720p display and are still are dual-core and 1GB of RAM.
- Which is faster? A6 processor from apple, or 1.4 quad core Exynos? I want to know which one is faster, the appale iphone 5's processor (A6 ARM from apple) or the galaxy S' (1.4 quad core Exynos)?
- Upcoming iPhone 5S or HTC One? Which one would you get? I'm confused between the two. I have to get a new phone because my S4 has a lot of problems, so I will be changing my phone in October. Which one would you suggest?
- Is the iPhone 5's A6 Chipset a Quad Core? I don't get it. Some bloggers are saying it is while other bloggers are saying it's a dual core. But then again, why would Apple release a dual core phone?
