Is a pedometer or mapmyride more accurate?

My friend uses the mapmyride app on her iphone when we go walking. I use an expensive pedometer. Her app says we walk almost twice as many miles & burn about 200 more calories than my pedometer reads. We put the same settings in both, as far as weight, height, ect…

Pedometers are not very accurate for distances. Anything that relies on map distances and/or GPS will be the more accurate device.

Nothing is accurate for estimating calories burned. Those calculations rely on generalized formulas that don't work for everyone, they really are just giving a rough estimate.

Here's a good way to check your devices. Go for a walk along a street/road, a pretty long one. Then drive the course and see what the car odometer says the distance is.

Ok, there's something wrong here.
Basically, mapmyride or any GPS system is going to be more accurate than a pedometer. But a pedometer should be less than 10% off.

I don't know how mapmyride adjusts for elevation changes but if your route is really hilly, a pedometer may be more accurate as far as actual mileage traveled.

pedometers usually are pretty inacurate as far as calories go… But you can still use the calories calculation as a reference point.

You and your friend should go for a walk in a park with mileage signs. Or 4 laps around a track.
