Is it a good idea to bring your iphone 4 to Africa?

So i'm going to Africa this summer and i was wondering if it would be ok to bring your iphone. Will it work there? Can you make calls or send text messages? I was going to bring it mainly to take pictures and videos, but i was just curious if you would be able to get service there. Thanks

It depends on where you are going: if you go to a South-African town (for instance), then you will most likely get coverage from a local mobile provider, but if you want to make a call from there, you will have to pay an additionnal fee, depending on your mobile provider.
