When you do this, the battery may become "overheated" and then in the long run will make it die sooner. So yes it could. Also as when I did this with my iPhone 2G the battery burnt out and the phone completely died.

No. The charge controller inside the iPhone doesn't keep charging the battery when it is full. The idea that this will overcharge the device or heat the battery is utter rubbish and superstition, even if someone claims to be a developer.

I measured how much electricity my iPhone charger was using when the iPhone was on but fully charged. It was less than half a watt. If you leave it connected 24 hours a day 365 days a year, that's 8 kilowatt hours of electricity a year. In my state, I pay 10 cents per kilowatt hour, which would make it 80 cents a year.

Just to be clear, if it's pulling 0.1 watts and turning it all into heat, that's 0.8 kilowatt-hours per year, which is 688 kilocalories. The iPhone will be putting out enough heat in a year to heat up one liter of water by 0.688 degrees centigrade. That's hardly going to melt down your phone. If you have invented a way to create more heat than you add in electricity, you will be famous for breaking the most fundamental laws of physics.

Just for reference, an adult human puts out about 50 watts of heat. 0.1 watts is nothing.
