Is it possible to ruin a camera, taking photos of the sun?

I love taking photos of the sky with my iPhone 5, which has got the feature to take easily photos of the sun or other light sources.

Yes, direct sunlight (bright sunlight) can ruin your camera as the lens acts as a magnifier of the sun into camera… You can get a quick glint of sun flare if you like but not direct.flair flare (which one) lol

I don't think so, you might have to google that one

Yes, it is possible to ruin a camera doing that. Camera phones don't have a sensor like p/s and dslr cameras do, so I don't think a few quick shots of the sun will hurt your phone. If you use a "real" camera, don't zoom too close to the sun for a long period of time (over 30 seconds) because the light from the sun gets magnified in the lens, and can burn/melt the interior workings of the camera.

Yes, and the higher in the sky the worse the effect. Still not so bad (or as worrying) as a video I found on youtube showing a stage show laser light that burned out pixels on a dslr. That's worrying because it was almost certainly damaging people eyesight too!

Yes you can ruin a digital camera this way, depending on the brand. Most now have automatic cutoffs that prevent this.

A traditional camera can't be ruined this way.

Direct sunlight can fry your sensor.

Not usually.

Point and shoot and phone cameras will not be effected at all by taking a still photo.

Even SLR's will be fine, provided that you are exposing properly. If you use exposure times, that are significantly longer than necessary, you could run into problems.

However, in general, as long as you are just photographing the sun, your camera will be unaffected. The only problems ill come from pointing the lens at the sun for a lot longer than it takes to get the shot.

edit:
I have photographed the sun countless times with my DSLR without a problem:

Normally, taking a picture of the bright sun takes shorter than a thousandth of a second. Go more than a couple of seconds and you may fry the digital sensor of your camera. This means that all cameras using LiveView shouldn't be pointed directly to the sun.

  • Would I burn my eyes if I look at a picture of the sun? I try to look directly at the sun during the summer but always end up hurting my eyes. My question is, would my eyes experience the same pain if I look directly at a picture of the sun on my iPhone? Now, I know I'm not a professor or anything but clearly I'd go blind after looking at the picture after a good 7-8 seconds, right?
  • Will taking the battery out of my Iphone ruin it? Not sure why I think it might, but i dropped my iphone in water and I was told I should take the battery out then put it in a bag of rice… For some reason I'm just worried I might ruin it. Will it?
  • Sun and Moon not in the right place on sky guide app for iphone? I have checked the time on my settings and that is correct, but during the day the sun is shown on the other side of the world, and the moon is up and vice versa. Any ideas what's going on? Not life or death, just curious.
  • Photos on Iphone taking up 8GB and I only have 200 photos? Yeah I know but even if I have ZERO photos its still says photos are taking up 8GB
