Is it safe to charge my iPhone from us in Thailand sockets?

If the charger is rated for 120/240v input it will be ok. It should be on the label.

Yes, if the sockets are for 120/.240 volts!
See and read first!

Sure. The chargers are universal chargers that work in the range of 110 to 240 VAC.

Yes

It will be very safe.

I've been charging laptops and phones in Thailand for about ten years and have never had a problem.

Just make sure your electrical adapter is rated 110/220 volts!

Maybe. Read the fine print on the body of the charger, the thing with prongs to plug in the wall. If it says any numbers INCLUDING above 220 VOLTS, then yes it is ok to use in Thailand.

Usually, the fine print says something like "100-240 V," and that is OK.

If it says any number below 200 V, then NO NO NO.

Items purchased in the last few years work on a wide variety of power voltages automatically. However, you may need to buy some plug adapters from a Am.luggage store, or in Thailand, where they are widely available. Thai old style sockets take two round pins, newer style take two round or flat pins. Very new style sockets take three pins, but the third pin, the ground, is often not attached to real ground. I would buy a Thai outlet strip with socket holes for all kinds of plugs and two flat pins on the attached wire. On the shelf at Tesco Lotus and many other places.

IMPORTANT… Except in very new Thai buildings, there's no ground on any kind of sockets configuration. The American style plug with two flat pins and one round pin (ground) can be used with adapter noted above, but the one round pin hole does not go anywhere inside the adapter. Also, unlike American wiring, you can't get 115volts off of a Thai 220volt socket by just tapping the hot 220v side socket hole and the other side to your user-supplied ground. Can't.

In some areas, the Thai voltages may drop as low as 170v or so and stay there for a long time or even provide much higher voltages in very short duration spikes upward. If you have a very delicate electronic device, best to check with someone knowledgeable.

You may plug your plugs into Thai sockets either way, left pin in right socket or left pin in left socket, but if you have an American device, it may want the smaller flat pin to be on the hot side of the Thai sockets; usually not a problem but something to know.

Added note… Using Thai two pin sockets, your metal case on your Apple MacBook will have a part of a volt on its case when the charger is plugged in. Some people can feel low voltages like that and if it bothers you, just use the laptop on battery.

  • What's the difference between the US and Thailand made iPhone 4s? I'm planning to buy an iPhone here at the Philippines. But, some shops offer iPhones made from Thailand, Korea, etc. (other than the US) Are they the same in terms of hardware? Some of my friends told me that if you buy a non-US made iphone, there's really no difference. Okay, so if I buy, let's say, the Thailand version of an iPhone 4s. It's really the same as every other iPhones out there? Well, minus the contracts, because I don't live in the US.
  • Is there an iPhone app that I can use to text while I'm in Thailand? I was just wondering if there's an app that lets me text people (iPhone/Android users) back in the US for free? And would there be any fees added to my bill or anything that I should be aware of?
  • Is thailand electrical system safe? I moved to Thailand about 2 week ago and i have had no problems until i got a 2 pin adapter for my phone (iPhone 3gs) and i plugged the usb into this adapter and then plugged it into the socket and it gave me a huge shock and it tripped the fuse box. But i was wondering if that could happen again e.g. My shower is a electrical heated one or like nothing is earthed in Thailand so i could get a shock from my true vision box.
  • Is it safe to leave my iphone plugged in and on safe? I have to download sometbing that will take multiple hours, i eould like to know if it is safe to leave my iphone 4s plugged in charging while the screen remians on. Will the screen stop working?
