My iPhone is stolen and 2-Year contract is just started?

I bought a new iPhone 5 at the discounted price of $199 in NJ. Unfortunately, I lost my phone while travelling. My two-Year contract is just started and I'm not using that phone now. What are the consequences of not paying the bill or what is the procedure to cancel the plan?

With the provider I work for, if you don't pay your bill, you'll get cancelled and they'll charge you an early termination fee for not fulfilling the terms of your contract. If you willingly pay the term fee, then you could go back to being eligible for a discount on a new phone, but those term fees can be pricey (anywhere from $150 to $350). Call your provider at 611 to see how much yours would be. To cancel the whole acct (or even just your number), you would call in and tell them that's what you want to do. They will then charge the term fee on your next bill and cancel the number. If you take your number to a different carrier (called "porting a number"), your acct will cancel with your current provider once that number is active on the new provider's service. Your old carrier will still charge the term fee on your next bill, but you don't lose your number and can most likely get a new discounted phone from your new carrier.

In all scenarios, you will get charged a fee for ending the contract early with your current provider. There's no real way of avoiding it short of saying the user died (and then they're gonna want to see the death certificate or obit) AND, if you don't pay the bill they send you, your acct will get sent to collection and you'll get harassed by collection agency goons, which is no fun… Unless you have a new number that they don't know. Doesn't mean the debt will disappear, just that you will avoid dealing with it… For now. But, trust me, it will pop up again, much bigger and more annoying than it ever was before.

You could always just try to find a used smartphone that works on your provider's service and activate it on your number to avoid the cost of the term fee. Just take that phone to your local store and put it on your number.

You will be charged $349 for the contract and full price of the iphone 5
