My iPhone won't play music when it's connected to headphones?

I plugged in my headphones and tried to listen to a song but it wouldn't start playing. So I unplugged the headphones and hit play and the music came out of the actual speakers. Then I paused it and plugged the headphones back in. When I hit play it worked. I just don't want to have to do that every time I want to listen to music. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Maybe these solutions can help

Make sure its not the headphones

Turn the iPhone off
- Long press the top button
-Swipe to shut off
- Leave of for 10-20 sec
-Turn on

Wiping data
- Plug your iPhone into itunes
-Click the iPhone Logo
-Factory reset
